As home improvements go, cabinet refacing is a relative new kid on the block. Through the first three quarters of the 20th century, kitchen cabinets were always built for that particular home - store bought cabinets were not yet available. There was little innovation - the cabinets were plenty solid, but doors were flat plywood or lumber core, generally made from birch wood. Everyone’s kitchen looked more or less the same.
In the early 1970's mass produced cabinets became available and soon enough a new style- raised panel doors - changed everything. Suddenly, there were all sorts of options of wood, stain, and style.
But those old cabinets from the 40's, 50's, and 60's were so sturdy and often so uniquely custom. Hence, the inspiration to develop a system to make those old boxes look brand new.
In 1979, the first refacing company came to Central Illinois. Long since gone, Cabinet Pac got the ball rolling locally. In 1985, Wood Front™ Kitchens began and by the early 90's became established as the industry leader in downstate Illinois. In 2003, it was acquired by the Prairie Home Alliance, itself one of the largest home improvement concerns in the Midwest.
